Tampines Rovers vs Home United

(Friday, 13 May, 7.45pm, Jalan Besar Stadium)

Title-aspirant Tampines Rovers will seek no less than three points against Home United if they are to close the gap with current Great Eastern Yeo’s S.League leaders Albirex Niigata (S).

Tampines are currently second in the table on 21 points, five points behind the Albirex while Home United are in sixth position on 15 points.

The encounter between the Stags and the Protectors earlier in the season ended in a 1-1 draw with Jermaine Pennant and Ken Ilso getting onto the scoresheet for their teams.

Both coaches come into this match on a high as V.Sundramoorthy led Tampines to the the AFC Cup knockout phase after they defeated Malaysian outfit Selangor 1-0 in front of 11,875 fans at the National Stadium.

For Philippe Aw, he had the honour of leading a Singapore Selection side to their first ever Sultan of Selangor Cup win since 2011 by beating Selangor Selection 4-3 through a penalty shootout after the score was tied 1-1 at full-time.

Back to the domestic front, coincidentally both teams’ previous match in the S.League was against Hougang United. It was a very physical and tight match for both teams in which Home eked out a 3-2 win, while Tampines were held to a 1-1 draw.

Sundram will definitely be hoping for his charges to get their act together and put out a better showing against the Bishan-based club, especially in front of goal.

“It wasn’t our best game today (against Hougang) and I believe we were missing (Jordan) Webb and Jermaine Pennant who would have given us extra punch upfront,” said the former Singapore international after they dropped two points at the Hougang Stadium.

“We were punished because we didn’t put away the chances we created. They are seasoned campaigners and they should now focus on the next game. What’s done cannot be undone and we have to move on.”

For Aw, even though they managed maximum points in their last league outing, he will be expecting his players to be clinical at the final third and seal their points early in the tie.

“We need to finish our chances better. It has been difficult for us to win games because it’s always close until the last minute,” said Aw after their win over the Cheetahs.
