A resurgent Tanjong Pagar United will welcome Warriors FC to Queenstown Stadium on Friday evening in the quarter-finals of the 2014 StarHub League Cup.

While they have endured a disappointing Great Eastern Yeo’s S.League season so far, the Jaguars have actually performed well in the League Cup by staying unbeaten to finish top of Group A.

What made that more remarkable was the fact they beat Albirex Niigata (S) 4-0 in the opening match at Queenstown and that followed up with a 7-1 drubbing of semi-professional side Police SA three days later.

With the return of several key defenders, it has allowed head coach Patrick Vallee to push skipper Ahmad Latiff upfront alongside Monsef Zerka in a masterstroke that has seen the 35-year-old score three goals over the last two games.

However, one cannot discount the threats from the likes of Firdaus Idros and Sebastien Etiemble, who have the ability to cause damage as well with the former grabbing a hat-trick against Police in their last match and will be keen to add to that tally.

Warriors on the other hand, will be eager to bounce back from a 4-0 loss to Geylang International in a game where coach Alex Weaver started with a team of reserves and Prime League players.

By doing that, there were claims from certain quarters in the fraternity that he had wanted to avoid Albirex in the last eight.

However, the former Stoke City academy coach refuted those with a statement which explained that it was a move to keep his players fresh for this match having already qualified for the knockout stages with a game to go.

Adding that he was ‘looking forward’ to this one, Weaver said: “Against Tanjong Pagar it will be difficult, we’ve had a couple of hard games against them this season.

“But it will be nice to be playing on their field, the pitch at Choa Chu Kang is in a bit of poor state so it will be good to play on a better surface.”

That said, it is likely that the eight-time league champions will revert to fielding a full-strength squad with a host of regulars such as Nicholas Velez and captain Daniel Bennett set to be reinstated to the starting line-up.
