A total of 16 tertiary students will be presented with Hougang United’s inaugural scholarship this Saturday at the Japanese Association.

Launched in May earlier this year, the scholarship aims to support the academic development of young Singaporeans involved in competitive football.

During its launch, Hougang’s vice-chariman and head of scholarship committee Eric Koh outlined the club’s motivations for the creation of the scholarship.

“This is a milestone in the history of the S.League. “It underscores the club’s commitment to giving back to Singapore football,” said Koh.

“This is a club initiative with a national objective. For the last five years, we have been the most successful in revenue generation and it’s time for us to give back.”

A sum of $1 million has been allocated for the scholarship, and it will be bond-free and tenable in any of the local ITE or Polytechnics.

This scholarship is opened to Singaporean students aged from 16 to 23, with plans to or are already enrolled in these institutions, if they are competing in football leagues affiliated with the Football Association of Singapore, apart from the S.League.

Both Koh and Hougang chairman Bill Ng will be present at the ceremony to present the scholarship to the recipients.
