Cheetahs Stunned At Own Backyard By Young Lions
Written By: Kenneth Ho
Courts Young Lions earned their second win of the season in devastating style as they put three unanswered goals past Hougang United to earn a 3-0 win at Hougang Stadium on Friday evening.
The visitors saw Sahil Suhaimi and Jordan Webb respectively grabbing a brace and a goal to upset the Cheetahs at their home ground.
Hougang captain and first-choice goalkeeper Fadhil Salim suffered a nightmarish return from injury to the squad as he saw his backline let him down on several occasions to concede the three goals.
In the space of five minutes in the first half , the Young Lions managed to make two successful counterattacks to stun the hosts against the run of play.
Sahil first went on a solo run down the left channel after Webb played him on in the 38th minute. As the Hougang defence stood off the striker, he promptly sent in a superb effort past Hougang goalkeeper Fadhil Salim to grab the opener.
Sahil nearly replicated his first goal two minutes later but Fadhil this time thwarted the youngster with a stupendous one-handed save.
However the goalkeeper was unable to deny Webb minutes later, as Sahil returned the favour to the Canadian by playing him through.
This time, the entire Hougang defence stood static and the speedy winger had a clear run at goal before dispatching past a despairing Fadhil to allow the visitors to take a two-goal lead into the break.
There was more to come after the break as Sahil then scored another outstanding goal in the 65th minute.
Displaying superb composure and technical skills, Sahil weaved past three players and drew Fadhil in before placing the ball past the hapless custodian.
It was also the Young Lion s’ first clean sheet of the season, and much credit has to go to their young custodian Syazwan Buhari who made several top-notch saves against Hougang.
Syazwan had to be on his toes right from the go, as he pushed away Erwan Gunawan’s lashed shot in the 12th minute.
The custodian also had to tip away an Igor Cerina header before producing a stupendous save from Geison Moura’s bullet header which was heading for the top corner in the 36th minute.
It was wondered whether Syazwan could maintain his excellent performance in the second half but he soon put bed to these concerns as he came out from the break more domineering in his box.
The match also saw Sahil and Fazli Jaffar dismissed ten minutes from time for an off-the-ball incident.
