SINGAPORE, 15 JULY 2020 – The Lion City Sailors announced earlier today that they have reached a mutual agreement with striker Andrew Pengelly to terminate his contract.

The Singapore Premier League (SPL) side signed the 23-year-old last December to spearhead their strikeforce for the 2020 season and he netted on his professional debut to rescue a point in their 1-1 opening draw against Tanjong Pagar United in March.

Pengelly made one more league appearance before matches were suspended due to the coronavirus situation. In the announcement on their social media channels, the Sailors stated that Pengelly was allowed to return to Australia “to be with family” during the circuit-breaker period.

“We understand the critical importance of family and home in these difficult and unprecedented times we live in, and we fully respect Andy’s decision,” the statement continued. “While we had great expectations for Andy this season, the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic meant we were unable to see more of him before the Singapore Premier League was suspended.

“All of us at the Lion City Sailors would like to thank Andy for his professionalism and contributions to the club.”

Pengelly made headlines in Australia’s semi-professional Football Queensland National Premier League (NPL) with Brisbane Strikers last year, netting 52 goals in 34 games in all competitions. These included goals against A-League sides Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne City in the Football Federation Australia (FFA) Cup.

He then signed for fellow NPL side Peninsula Power in November 2019 for their upcoming 2020 campaign but was allowed to transfer to the Sailors to play professional football barely a month later.
