After his side’s convincing victory over Garena Young Lions in their opening game of the 2017 Great Eastern-Hyundai S.League campaign, Home United head coach Aidil Sharin believes his charges can get even better.

The result propelled the Protectors to the top of the S.League standings due to their superior goal advantage, but Aidil is keen for Home to turn their attentions quickly to their next game against Brunei DPMM in Bandar Seri Begawan on Friday night.

“I am not surprised they have gelled so quickly, considering the quality of the players we have,” Aidil explained after the victory over the Young Lions.

“We lost all our pre-season games, but let’s not forget – we played all the top teams of higher level. We learnt from there and you can see the team is slowly gelling together.

“DPMM is going to be tough and as we all know, it’s not easy to play at their stadium so we have to forget about today’s victory and have to prepare starting from tomorrow.”

Aidil believes that the signing of defensive-minded players like centre-back Afiq Yunos and deep-lying playmaker Izzdin Shafiq, as well as deploying the towering Irfan Fandi in centre-back could be key to Home’s fortunes this season.

“If you look at last year’s record, we leaked a lot of goals so the main thing is definitely to concede fewer goals,” asserted the former Singapore international.

“Albirex Niigata (S) won (the S.League title) last season because they conceded the least goals amongst the all teams. If you defend well and score, you will definitely be up there so that’s the main goal for this season.”

A watertight defence will certainly be crucial for the Protectors against the Wasps, as the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium has proven to be a fortress for Steve Kean’s men, who lost only thrice at home last season.

Despite letting go of influential Portuguese playmaker Paulo Sergio, DPMM have found an able replacement in striker Billy Mehmet from Tampines Rovers, who plundered 15 goals  for the Stags in the league last season.

They have also signed experienced French centre-back Francois Marque from FC Le Mont, who was once in the FC Basel side that held FC Barcelona to a 1-1 in a UEFA Champions League group game, to replace the towering Brian McLean.

Having lost two out of their three meetings last season, the Protectors will be eager to set the record straight against the Wasps when the two sides clash.
