DPMM Held by Improved Eagles
Written By: Kenneth Ho
Geylang International defied expectations at Bedok Stadium on Friday evening to hold DPMM Brunei to a 1-1 draw.
Yuki Ichikawa gave the hosts the lead but Rodrigo Tosi continued his rich vein of form by equalising for the Wasps.
In a game which Geylang refused to be overwhelmed by their more illustrious opponents, chances were few and far between as the Eagles put up a great defensive show to deny the visitors.
DPMM could have taken an early lead when their captain Rosmin Kamis swung a superb free kick into the box towards Roy O’Donovan but the latter was unable to get a touch in on the ball.
The Eagles then took the lead through Ichikawa with the defender capitalising on DPMM goalkeeper Wardun Yussof’s error to stab home the ball from close range in the 17th minute.
However the lead barely lasted four minutes as Tosi headed in Azwan Saleh’s free kick to cancel out Ichikawa’s opener.
DPMM then had a chance moments later when a Rosmin corner was met by a towering Boris Raspudic whose header barely cleared the crossbar.
The compact defensive show by Geylang continued after the break, as for all their attacking prowess, DPMM were finding it hard to make headway against their stubborn opponents.
Yet, there were moments of panic for Geylang still.
Tosi had a chance after being released but his left-footed shot from the side trickled past the far post, while Geylang defenders had to put in a couple of important stops to prevent their opponents from having a clear run or shot at goal.
Even when DPMM finally managed to get a breakthrough in the final minutes of the game, they were unable to put one past Geylang goalkeeper Joey Sim.
DPMM forward Donovan found himself on a one-on-one with Sim and he chose to go for goal even though he had options to his left and right.
However Sim got down well to keep out the shot before scrambling to get onto to the rebound.
That save proved important as the referee signalled the end of the game thereafter and gave the Eagles a well-deserved point against the title contenders.
