SINGAPORE, 27 JUNE 2021 – Hougang United have boosted their goalkeeping ranks with the addition of Singapore international Izwan Mahbud.

The AIA Singapore Premier League (SPL) side confirmed on Sunday afternoon the signing of the 30-year-old, who is first-choice at international level for the Lions. In a statement, the Cheetahs noted that he has joined for the remainder of the current season. It marks a homecoming for Izwan, who has plied his trade in Thailand since leaving Tampines Rovers in 2017.

Hougang will be Izwan’s third SPL club after the Young Lions, where he started his career in 2008, and Tampines, for whom he turned out in 2016 and 2017. He spent 2012 to 2015 with the LionsXII, winning the 2013 Malaysia Super League title with them, and forayed further with his transfer to Thai League 2 side Nongbua Pitchaya in 2018. Izwan then moved to the top flight with Trat FC in 2020 and then Samut Prakan City in mid-2020 before returning to Singapore following the conclusion of the Thai League 1 season.

Regarded as one of Singapore’s best ever custodians, Izwan has been capped 54 times at international level and will compete for a starting position with Ridhuan Barudin and Mukundan Maran as Hougang challenge for this season’s title.
