2021 SPL Awards – May: Tampines Rovers win double

SINGAPORE, 29 JUNE 2021 – The month of May proved to be extremely tough for the judging panel, thanks to some outstanding performances in the AIA Singapore Premier League (SPL).

In the end, Tampines Rovers were the big winners as they picked up two out of the four awards available. We present to you May’s winners!

2021’s winners: March | April

The Winners

Player of the Month

Boris Kopitović brought his goal tally to 12 this month, just two behind current top scorer, Hougang United’s Tomoyuki Doi. The Montenegrin star plundered five goals in May and has scored in each of his last three matches, which has also helped the 26-year-old exceed last season’s tally of nine. The lanky attacker is a key part of the Stags forward line and has netted three brace so far, second only to Doi’s four.

Young Player of the Month

A sparkling month has thrust Idraki Adnan into the spotlight. The 22-year-old forward, comfortable on either flank, has been a force to be reckoned with by scoring in each of his last three matches for Hougang United, which included the winner against Tampines in their most recent match. He also chipped in with two assists during a fruitful period and was rewarded with a maiden international call-up.

Coach of the Month

A 100 per cent winning record from their three matches in May, which saw Hougang score 12 times, has helped Clement Teo become the first repeat award winner this season. The 54-year-old tactician, who took the award in March, has helped his side move up to third, four points behind leaders Albirex Niigata (S), as they aim to challenge for the title.

Kyoga Nakamura’s screamer from 45 yards out against the Young Lions took the cake this month as the Stags’ Japanese star showed tremendous vision and technique to catch the goalkeeper out from range. What a hit!
