2021 SPL Awards – September: Lion City Sailors win big!

SINGAPORE, 6 OCTOBER 2021 – It is another month of first-time winners for the AIA Singapore Premier League (SPL) awards for September, with the Lion City Sailors sweeping three of the four categories!

2021’s winners: March | April | May | August

The Winners

Player of the Month

An indomitable figure at the heart of the Sailors’ defence this season, Jorge Fellipe continued his impressive form in September. The 32-year-old Brazilian centre-back helped his side maintain their title pursuit by contributing at both ends, most notably scoring a brace to spark a comeback victory against the Young Lions.

Young Player of the Month

After a promising start to his maiden season at the Sailors was interrupted by an ankle injury, Nur Adam Abdullah returned from a one-and-a-half-month layoff with a vengeance. The 20-year-old left-back completed nine consecutive matches as his chased down leaders Albirex Niigata (S) and particularly stood out last month as he seemed to go from strength to strength. A dynamic presence on his flank, Nur Adam pulls his weight both defensively and offensively thanks to his astute reading and technical ability, as well as a ruggedness that has served him well against more experienced opposition. Unsurprisingly, he was called up to the Singapore National Team for the first time in September and the future looks bright for Nur Adam.

Coach of the Month

An undefeated September that saw the Sailors take three wins from four matches meant Kim Do-hoon’s good start to life at his new club continued. After a slow start, the Sailors appear to have clicked into gear under the Korean, who took charge in mid-season and they scored 13 goals while conceding thrice en-route to topping the SPL table.

Fabian Kwok’s first league goal in two years was worth the wait as he opened the scoring for Hougang United against Tampines Rovers with a strike of the highest order. Having seen opposing goalkeeper Zulfairuuz Rudy produce a hurried clearance that came his way, the 32-year-old midfielder did not hesitate by meeting the ball with a perfectly measured hit that floated over the desperately back-pedalling custodian and dipped under the bar from 30 yards.
