2021 SPL season to end on 10 October

SINGAPORE, 21 SEPTEMBER 2021 – The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) today confirmed that, after consultations with the participating clubs, the 2021 AIA Singapore Premier League (SPL) season will be extended due to the impact of two recent COVID-19 cases among the playing members of Geylang International FC and Balestier Khalsa FC.

The positive results were detected during the mandatory weekly pooled swab tests that all SPL players and club officials have to undergo. The respective teams then immediately begun self-isolation and saw their training sessions suspended for the following 10 days, which resulted in the postponement of their remaining fixtures for September. Geylang International and Balestier Khalsa are set to resume training today and on 28 September respectively.

While the final round of fixtures for the current season was projected to end on 2 October, as announced earlier this June, it has now been rescheduled to finish with a final round of four fixtures on 10 October. This has been necessitated to ensure the necessary protocols adopted are fully executed to safeguard the health and safety of all players, officials and staff of the League.

As such, contingency plans have been implemented to ensure that the SPL season can be completed successfully, while also allowing the subsequent preparations for the Singapore Under-22 National Team to commence in time for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Asian Cup 2022 Qualifiers between 21 to 31 October.
