SINGAPORE, 27 APRIL 2021 – Former Australia captain Aurelio Vidmar will leave his role as head coach of the Lion City Sailors at the end of this month.

The departure was announced by the Singapore Premier League (SPL) club earlier this evening in a statement, which noted that Vidmar has left to “pursue other opportunities” with effect from 30 April.  The Sailors’ Under-21 head coach, Robin Chitrakar, will serve as interim head coach.

Vidmar, 54, said: “I’m grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of the Lion City Sailors project and I thoroughly enjoyed my time here with the team and management. I’m sure Singapore football fans were entertained by some of the football we continue to dish out, and I look forward to hearing about the future successes of the club. Thank you, Sailors, and thank you Singapore for your hospitality and kindness during my time here.”

The Adelaide native was appointed as the Sailors’ first ever head coach when they were formed as Singapore’s first ever privatised football club in February 2020. Vidmar led the Sailors to third place in their augural SPL season.

The Sailors will make an announcement on Vidmar’s successor in “due course”.
