Avengers Seize Great Eastern Amateur Football League Crown In Pulsating Final

Written By: Kenneth Ho

The Great Eastern Amateur Football League (AFL) came to an end as Avengers Alliance seized the title after seeing off Samba Warriors 4-3 on penalties.

The game had ended 2-2 after Samba clawed back from a two-goal deficit but they were unable to hold their nerves when it mattered in the shootout.

Great Eastern expressed their appreciation to the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) and S.League for providing their assistance in the successful organising of the league.

“There are a lot of learnings from this, but most importantly, before we talk about benefits, we are very grateful to FAS and the S.League to have been so supportive and to help us organise this,” Colin Chan, Chief Marketing Officer, Great Eastern Life said.

“With this it really gives the participants and community at large and our key stakeholders an opportunity to increase engagement and enjoy the beautiful game that we have.”

“Any team sports, when you have a little bit of competition it gives huge opportunity for the team to come together to not only just have fun but also work together better.”

Organiser Glen Yong agreed as he added: Great Eastern has sponsored the S.League since 2009, six years now and we’ve taken that a step further by organising this amateur football league.”

The Final was held at the Jalan Besar Stadium, the first time any clubs in the AFL played at the venue and participants were grateful for the chance to do so.

Avengers’ team manager Swee Yong said: “It was nice to be able to play in this stadium, it’s a rare chance to do so and we had it.”
