Brunei DPMM young winger Azwan Ali is hoping his 2015 Great Eastern Young Player of the Year award will be fuel his desire to improve as a player.
Azwan scored four goals but his contribution in the assist department was the most telling as he provided 15 assists in 27 games to help DPMM to their first-ever title.
After missing out on the award last season, Azwan is glad he finally clinched the coveted prize at his last chance as he will be overaged and not qualify for it next year.
“I am really, really happy to get this award. I didn’t expect to get the award. It’s special to me to win it for this season,” Azwan said.
“Every game I gave my 100% for months, even in training, and this is good for me to get the best young player award.”
As far as DPMM coach Steve Kean was concerned, his young charge fully deserved the accolade as he heaped praises on Azwan.
“He’s an exceptional talent. I couldn’t believe he was not playing when I first got here. He’s an absolute gem. He’s as good a player as I’ve worked with,” Kean shared.
“I’ve worked with lots of good young ones – Junior Hoilett, Martin Olsen at Blackburn Rovers a few years ago they were exceptional
“This boy can play at a very high level and I’m glad he’s got the award. It may give him an added step for him to realise how good he is. He’s a difference maker and it’s like an additional foreign signing.”
Azwan thanked his coach and teammates for assisting him, and shared that his target next season is to win the Player of the Year award.
“Thank you for voting me as the best young player, it’s the best moment for me,” Azwan said.
“I am overage for next season, so hopefully y target is to get the best Player of the Year award.”
