Five lessons from Matchweek 18 of the Singapore Premier League
Matchweek 18 of the Singapore Premier League delivered a mix of dominant displays and sobering defeats, as the title race edges closer to its conclusion and the battle across the rest of the table intensifies. Here are five key lessons from the latest round of action:
Defensive fragility continues to haunt the Young Lions

BG Tampines Rovers 8-1 Young Lions | Our Tampines Hub | 24 April
(Trent Buhagiar 4′, Irfan Najeeb 23′, Shah Shahiran 28′, 78′, Kohya Kazama 33′, Glenn Kweh 80′, Ong Yu En 88′, Hide Higashikawa 90+6′ | Sergio Mendonça 31′)
Young Lions’ defensive struggles were laid bare once again in a heavy 8-1 defeat to BG Tampines Rovers, a result that encapsulates the issues that have plagued them throughout the season.
The Stags cut through the Young Lions’ backline with ease, putting four past them in the first half alone, with defensive lapses and a lack of organisation repeatedly exposed. While Sergio Mendonca’s well-taken solo effort offered a brief moment of quality, it did little to mask the issues at the back.
Any hopes of a response were effectively ended when Marcus Mosses was sent off following a VAR review, leaving Firdaus Kassim’s side to navigate the remainder of the match with 10 men. Already under sustained pressure, the numerical disadvantage only compounded their defensive vulnerabilities, as they conceded four more goals in the second half.
For a Young Lions side hit by injuries and inexperience, the result serves as another reminder of the demands of competing at this level – and the need for greater defensive resilience as they continue their development.

Albirex’s attacking machine shows no signs of slowing

Albirex Niigata (S) 4-0 Tanjong Pagar United | Jurong East Stadium | 25 April
(Shingo Nakano 7′, 10′, 90′, Kim Taeuk 28′)
Albirex Niigata (S) continued their dominant run with another 4-0 victory, dispatching Tanjong Pagar United with clinical efficiency. The contest was effectively settled within the opening half hour, as Shingo Nakano struck twice early on before Kim Taeuk added a third with a powerful header.
Nakano completed his hat-trick late on, underlining his status as one of the league’s most prolific forwards and moving within touching distance of countryman, Hide Higashikawa, in the race for the Golden Boot. Back-to-back 4-0 wins highlight the White Swans’ attacking sharpness and consistency in front of goal.
For Tanjong Pagar, however, the defeat compounds a difficult season, with the Jaguars rooted to the bottom of the table. With time running out, Noh Alam Shah’s side must find answers quickly if they are to salvage some pride in the remaining fixtures.

Sailors’ title charge remains relentless

Geylang International 0-3 Lion City Sailors | Our Tampines Hub | 26 April
(Anderson Lopes 36′, Rui Pires 46′, Lennart Thy pen. 68′)
Lion City Sailors took another decisive step towards defending their title, overcoming Geylang International 3-0 to maintain their unbeaten run. Anderson Lopes opened the scoring with a clever chipped finish past Rudy Khairullah, before Rui Pires doubled the lead early in the second half.
Geylang’s resistance was further weakened when Shahdan Sulaiman was sent off for a goal-line handball, with Lennart Thy converting the resulting penalty to seal the result. The Sailors’ composure and depth continue to set them apart as they close in on back-to-back SPL titles.
For the Eagles, the focus now shifts to finishing strongly, with Noor Ali’s side still firmly in the hunt for a top-half placing.

Early errors prove costly for the Tigers

Balestier Khalsa 0-3 Hougang United | Bishan Stadium | 27 April
(Saifullah Akbar 2’, Jaushua Sotirio 4’, Farhan Zulkifli 50′)
Balestier Khalsa were left to rue costly defensive lapses as Hougang United secured a convincing 3-0 victory to snap their three-match losing streak. The Tigers fell behind within two minutes after a misplaced back pass allowed Saifullah Akbar to capitalise, before another error in the middle of the park handed Jaushua Sotirio a clear run on goal for the second.
Chasing the game from an early stage, Balestier struggled to recover, and Farhan Zulkifli’s second-half strike effectively ended the contest.
For Hougang, it was a composed and clinical display, while Balestier will reflect on a performance where individual mistakes ultimately shaped the outcome.
Balestier Khalsa: Mario Mustapic, Darren Teh, Mario Subaric, Madhu Mohana (C), Lazar Vujanic, Bogdan Mandic, Daniel Goh (Ignatius Ang 46’), Tin Matic, Masahiro Sugita, Fudhil I’Yadh (Tajeli Salamat 46’), Jakov Katusa

Stags’ title charge dented by disciplined Albirex

Albirex Niigata (S) 2-1 BG Tampines Rovers | Jurong East Stadium | 30 April
(Shingo Nakano 45′, Abdul Rasaq 62′ | Trent Buhagiar 45+2′)
BG Tampines Rovers’ title ambitions suffered a significant setback as Albirex Niigata (S) handed them just their second defeat of the season in a crucial clash.
In a must-win encounter to close the gap at the top, the Stags delivered a flat performance, lacking urgency and attacking incision against a well-drilled Albirex side. In contrast, the hosts carried the greater threat throughout, with Shingo Nakano and Yang Hyeonju consistently troubling the Stags defence.
Albirex eventually broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time, with Nakano heading home his 17th goal of the season. However, the lead was short-lived as Trent Buhagiar’s deflected effort restored parity almost immediately.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with BG Tampines struggling to assert themselves. Their passivity was punished in the 62nd minute when Abdul Rasaq reacted quickest in the box to fire home the winner. Despite late changes from Interim Head Coach William Phang, Albirex held firm to secure all three points – a result that leaves Lion City Sailors needing only a solitary point from their three remaining fixtures to seal the title.
Albirex Niigata (S): Hassan Sunny, Kim Taeuk, Komei Iida, Naoki Yoshioka (Ren Nishimura 79’), Zulqarnaen Suzliman (Takumi Yokohata 90+2’), Katsuyuki Ishibashi (Shakthi Vinayagavijayan 90+2’), Cho Eunsu, Abdul Rasaq (Jaden Heng 79’), Yang Hyeonju, Haziq Kamarudin (Nicky Melvin Singh 74’), Shingo Nakano (C)
Unused subs: Takahiro Koga, Dylan Pereira, Helmi Shahrol, Syukri Bashir, Delwinder Singh, Danish Qayyum, Aqil Zafri Junaidi
BG Tampines Rovers: Syazwan Buhari (C), Raoul Suhaimi (Irfan Najeeb 79’), Shuya Yamashita, Jacob Mahler, Shah Shahiran, Glenn Kweh (Seiga Sumi 67’), Trent Buhagiar, Hide Higashikawa (Taufik Suparno 70’), Takeshi Yoshimoto, Yuki Kobayashi (Joel Chew 67’), Kohya Kazama (Zikos Chua 79’)
Unused subs: Kasey Champlin Rogers, Ong Yu En, Dylan James Fox, Amirul Haikal, Anton Goh, Tara Ndao, Zeeshan Iskandar Dzulkarnain
