Group stage set for 2022 Singapore Cup

SINGAPORE, 27 SEPTEMBER 2022 – Defending champions Tampines Rovers will clash with derby rivals Geylang International in the group stage of the 2022 Singapore Cup as they bid to retain the trophy.

The 2019 champions, along with the seven other AIA Singapore Premier League (SPL) clubs, discovered their group-stage fates earlier today afternoon when the Official Draw for this year’s tournament was conducted at Jalan Besar Stadium.

The 23rd edition of Singapore’s premier Cup competition, which returns next month after a pandemic-enforced absence over the past two years, sees the eight SPL teams split into two groups of four. Group A consists of the Young Lions, Lion City Sailors, Balestier Khalsa and Albirex Niigata (S), while Group B comprises Tampines Rovers, Tanjong Pagar United, Hougang United and Geylang International. An open draw was implemented, with no seeding of any teams.

The Young Lions are back in the Singapore Cup for the first time since 2016, while the Lion City Sailors will take part for the first time. Tampines Rovers and Albirex Niigata (S) will aim to add to their collection of four triumphs each, while Hougang United eye the opportunity to win their first major honour.

The group-stage matches will run from 27 October to 6 November, with the top two teams from each group proceeding to a two-legged semi-final stage. That will take place on 11 and 15 November, with the third-place playoff and final scheduled for 18 and 19 November respectively. The schedule can be found here.
