5 talking points ahead of Matchweek 1 of the Singapore Premier League
The wait is over – the SPL returns this weekend, and Matchweek 1 has no shortage of storylines. From coaching shake-ups to blockbuster signings and fierce rivalries, here are five big questions that will shape the opening round.
- How will the Tigers move forward in the post-De Roo era?
As the Singapore Premier League (SPL) season starts afresh, so too does a new chapter at Balestier Khalsa. Previously driven by the fearless philosophy of Head Coach Peter de Roo, the Tigers displayed an attractive brand of attacking football, which helped them to a 4th place finish in the league in the 2024/25 season.
Now with familiar figure Marko Kraljević replacing him at the helm, the Tigers will look to build on their successful campaign last season. Out go foreign talents in Alen Kozar and Kodak Tanaka, in come Balkan reinforcements Mario Subaric and Bogdan Mandic – steel at the back, firepower up front. With 211 games in charge of Balestier under his belt, Marko’s experience will be key when it comes to navigating the challenges of this new era. But history looms large – Balestier have beaten Albirex just once in their last 28 league meetings.
- Will we see the resurgence of the White Swans?
Long renowned as one of the most dominant forces in the league in recent memory, Albirex Niigata (S) struggled to live up to their lofty standards in the past season. After transiting to a fully localised outfit, the White Swans limped to an underwhelming sixth-place last season, finishing 30 points off the summit.
A different buzz surrounds Albirex this season, as they set their sights on reclaiming former glory. Head Coach Keiji Shigetomi will once again lead the charge, supported by his 26-goal talisman, Shingo Nakano. In addition to a lineup of promising new Japanese talent, the White Swans have strengthened their squad with the South Korean trio of centre-backs Cho Eunsu and Kim Taeuk, along with forward Lee Dong Yeol. With renewed energy and their trademark work ethic stronger than ever, Albirex look well-poised for a strong campaign this season.

- Will the Eagles finally stamp their authority on the Eastern derby?
The East’s fiercest rivalry returns – and it rarely disappoints. Six draws in their last 12, but Geylang have only one win in that run. Can they finally flip the script? The Eagles will be looking to improve that record as they take their first step toward mounting a stronger challenge for the league title.
Despite losing their all-conquering forward Tomoyuki Doi, Geylang have recruited wisely, signing proven SPL stars like forward Riku Fukashiro and midfielder Kaisei Ogawa. Their experience will be crucial as they look to contain a flying BG Tampines side, who come into the game in fine form. With bragging rights in the East on the line, Geylang will be determined to make their presence felt right from the get-go.
- Can the Stags finally end their long wait for a league title?
For BG Tampines Rovers, it’s simple: end a 12-year wait for the league title. Having finished seven points behind the Sailors in the previous season, the Stags are determined to close the gap and clinch their first league title since 2013.
The Stags have already set an early marker down for the season by blowing away the Sailors in the Community Shield curtain-raiser, before securing a crucial away win against Dynamic Herb Cebu in the ASEAN Club Championship (ACC) Shopee Cup. New signings Trent Buhagiar, Koya Kazama, and Seiga Sumi are already making waves. Are the Stags finally ready to go all the way this time?

- Can the Sailors bounce back from a rocky start, or will the Cheetahs seize the chance to pounce?
Two games, two setbacks. Outclassed by Tampines, undone by JDT. The Sailor’s title defence is already under the microscope.
Sailors Head Coach Aleksandar Rankovic, however, remains optimistic that his men can weather the storm and come back stronger. That resolve will be put to the test when the Sailors begin their league campaign by hosting Hougang United at Our Tampines Hub just four days after their JDT clash. This weekend, they will unleash new stars Anderson Lopes and Tsiy Ndenge in the SPL for the first time. Can they spark a turnaround?
Hougang have reloaded too, having also bolstered their squad with additions like Canadian Premier League winner Victor Blasco and promising Thai forward Yotsakon Burapha.
History is not on their side, however, as Hougang have not triumphed in this fixture in their past 13 league attempts, with their last victory dating back to March 2021. But with the champions yet to click into gear, the Cheetahs will be looking to pull off an upset and start their campaign on the front foot.
