Match Week 2 Preview

5 talking points ahead of Matchweek 2 of the Singapore Premier League

The Singapore Premier League (SPL) roars back into action after the international break, promising another round of thrilling encounters that is set to captivate fans. From East-West clashes to a heavyweight showdown between the Sailors and the Tigers, here are five storylines to follow in Matchweek 2.

  1. Will Albirex unlock the Eagles’ defence?

Matchweek 2 bursts into life with the first of two East vs West showdowns as Geylang International take on Albirex Niigata (S) on Friday. With 25 goals shared in their last five league encounters, another high-scoring affair is on the cards. Albirex holds the upper hand with four wins in their past seven meetings, and have only failed to score in just one of their last 16 games against the Eagles.

However, the Eagles have shown in the Eastern derby that they are a tough side to break down. The spotlight may fall on the flanks, where Albirex’s wide duo Katsuyuki Ishibashi and Haziq Kamarudin will look to test fullbacks Nazrul Nazari and Shakir Hamzah. Geylang’s new centre-back Nikola Ignjatović will likely be fit to face striker Lee Dong-yeol, who was quiet on his debut against Balestier. With both sides hungry to earn their first win of the season, sparks are set to fly under the lights at Our Tampines Hub.

  1. Can the Jaguars defy history?

A new-look Tanjong Pagar United side awaits in the SPL this season. After scoring a league-low 35 goals and conceding a league-high 103 goals in the 2024/25 season, the Jaguars are determined to avoid the wooden spoon. To inject some fresh energy and experience into both ends of the team, they have overhauled their squad with a host of quality names.

Their attacking options have been boosted by well-travelled forward Youssef Ezzejjari and Brazilian attacking midfielder Bruno Dybal, while centre-back Aaron Evans and veteran goalkeeper Zaiful Nizam add defensive stability. Completing the mix is the youthful Korean duo of Lim Hyun-Sub and Kim Li-Kwan, who will be eager to make their mark on this new side.

The Jaguars face a daunting start with BG Tampines Rovers up first – a side that has beaten them in nine straight league meetings – before hosting Lion City Sailors the following week. Eager to shake off their underdog tag, expect Tanjong Pagar to come out fighting and spring a surprise if underestimated.

  1. Will the Stags maintain their early-season momentum?

Awaiting the Jaguars is a BG Tampines side riding high after an impressive start to the season. Forwards Trent Buhagiar and Hide Higashikawa have already formed a deadly partnership with five goals between them, and they will look to trouble a Tanjong Pagar defence that has not kept a clean sheet in the league since January. The Stags, in contrast, have kept six clean sheets in their last seven league meetings with the Jaguars – who have not scored in this fixture since July 2023.

Still, Tampines will be extra wary of the same low block that Geylang used to nullify them in the last match week. With the home side also likely to set up to frustrate the Stags, all eyes will be on how the visitors unlock a stubborn Tanjong Pagar defence.

  1. Can Balestier pounce on Sailors’ uncertainty?

The Sailors have flattered to deceive in their opening three games, losing their first two before scraping past a spirited Hougang United side in their league opener. This window of uncertainty could present Balestier Khalsa with the perfect opportunity to get one over the champions early on.

After a spirited 2-2 draw with Albirex Niigata in Match Week 1, there appears to be a renewed fire in Marko Kraljević’s Balestier side. Having seen the Sailors previously struggle with Hougang’s wing play, Marko will look to unleash his own key weapon – electric winger Daniel Goh. His blistering pace and ability to make runs behind the defence could cause problems for the Sailors’ high line, as the Tigers seek to capitalise on their aerial strength.

Balestier can take heart from their 1-0 victory over the Sailors in their most recent meeting, though it was only their first win in seven attempts.

  1. Will the Sailors’ new stars shine?

The Sailors recruited heavily in the off-season, bringing in the likes of Anderson Lopes, Ivan Sušak, Safuwan Baharudin. Expectations are understandably high, but the trio are still searching for a breakthrough – Anderson has yet to open his SPL account, while Sušak and Safuwan are chasing their first clean sheet together. Tsiy Ndenge has proved to be a bright spark, adding dynamism, steel and flair to the Sailor’s midfield roster.

For the champions, the question is whether their marquee signings can now deliver on their promise and ignite the Sailors’ title defence charge.
