MATCHWEEK 13 PREVIEW

Five talking points ahead of Matchweek 13 of the Singapore Premier League

Matchweek 12 delivered late drama, renewed rivalries and a stunning goalkeeper equaliser. Here are five talking points ahead of Matchweek 13:

White Swans gunning to sustain run

Despite conceding a late equaliser to the Lion City Sailors last week, Albirex Niigata (S) led for most of the contest and proved they could go toe-to-toe  with the league leaders.

With fixtures against Tanjong Pagar United and Geylang International up next, the White Swans will view this as an opportunity to build momentum before a crucial double-header against BG Tampines Rovers. On their best run of the season so far, confidence will be high in the Albirex camp as they look to keep pace with at the top of the table.

It is a contrasting story for the Jaguars, who sank to the bottom of the standings after their 10th defeat of the season. They will hardly find any respite against Albirex, and must muster a much improved performance to take anything from the encounter at Jurong East Stadium.

Sailors aiming to return to winning ways

Lion City Sailors needed a dramatic late goal from goalkeeper Ivan Susak against Albirex Niigata (S) to preserve their unbeaten run in the league, dropping points in consecutive games. Head Coach Jesus Casas will have much to ponder as he sets up his team to continue their quest for the title.

Next up are Geylang International, who have endured a difficult slump having lost five of their last six games. With their opponents in disarray, the Sailors will view this as a perfect opportunity to kickstart another winning streak.

Stags continue title pursuit

BG Tampines Rovers have impressed in 2026, cutting the gap to Lion City Sailors to only five points, while also reaching the ACL Two quarter finals. With their game in hand due to be played this month, the Stags have the opportunity to further apply pressure before the international break.

Young Lions, however, have shown steely resilience in recent weeks and will take heart from their improved performances. Having shown they can keep games competitive in recent weeks, they will hope for more of the same against the Stags.

Hougang look to bounce back against in-form Balestier

The final game of the weekend sees Hougang United face a confident Balestier Khalsa side at Bishan Stadium in what promises to be an intriguing contest.

Having lost against BG Tampines Rovers in their last fixture, the Cheetahs will now have to cope without Settawut Wongsai following the Thai forward’s dismissal last week.

Can Balestier pounce on wounded Cheetahs?

Balestier, meanwhile, have found their stride in recent weeks, rising to fourth in the league table after some impressive results. With their attack in free-scoring form, the Tigers will look to continue their ascent.

Both sides have different weapons in their arsenal to hurt their opponents, setting the stage for an open and competitive contest to unfold at Bishan Stadium.
