Matchweek 16 Preview

Matchweek 15 of the Singapore Premier League delivered one of the results of the season, with Albirex Niigata (S) stunning BG Tampines Rovers to shake up the title race.

With the stakes rising at both ends of the table, here are five talking points ahead of Matchweek 16:

Jaguars look to pile more misery on a depleted Young Lions

Tanjong Pagar United host Young Lions at Jurong East Stadium on Friday night (10 April) in a fixture that could determine the look of the bottom end of the eight-team Singapore Premier League ( SPL) table.

The Jaguars won the first meeting between these two teams 5-1 before the sides shared a 1-1 draw in the second round fixture, and Noh Alam Shah’s men will be eager to secure a third-round victory to build some much-needed momentum.

Young Lions showed plenty of promise last weekend despite their 2-0 defeat to Balestier Khalsa, but they head into Friday’s match without defender Joilson Lucas, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ACL injury — a significant blow to Firdaus Kassim in the final stretch of the campaign.

Stags seek swift response under Kinoshi

The Eastern Derby returns on Saturday night (11 April) as BG Tampines Rovers take on Geylang International at Our Tampines Hub.

The Stags will be looking for an immediate response to their first defeat of the season — a painful 3-2 collapse against Albirex Niigata (S) last weekend — that ended their unbeaten run and allowed Lion City Sailors to pull further clear at the top of the league standings.

Under newly appointed head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi, BG Tampines will be looking for a performance that reflects their serious title ambitions, and a home fixture against a Geylang side in modest form represents a good opportunity to get back on track.

Eagles look to keep flying high

While BG Tampines Rovers look to bounce back, Geylang International arrive at Our Tampines Hub with momentum of their own — back-to-back wins have lifted the Eagles and given Noor Ali’s side renewed belief heading into the business end of the season.

But Saturday’s (11 April) match will be one of their sternest tests yet.

The Stags’ Hide Higashikawa remains one of the most dangerous forwards in the league, and Geylang goalkeeper Rudy Khairullah — who delivered a match-winning save last weekend — will be tested once again. If the Eagles can continue to grind out results against top opposition, their form run will be all the more impressive.

Can anyone stop the Sailors?

Lion City Sailors head into Sunday’s (12 April) clash at Jalan Besar Stadium having gone 15 Singapore Premier League games unbeaten — an extraordinary run that has set them firmly on course for the title.

Standing in their way this time is a Hougang United side who are desperately in need of points in the final weeks of the season.

The Cheetahs know that a result here could be pivotal to their standing come the end of the campaign — but stopping a Sailors side firing on all cylinders will require something special.

Crouching Tigers a hidden danger for Albirex

Albirex Niigata (S) travel to Bishan Stadium on Monday (13 April)  night on the back of their biggest result of the season — a stunning 3-2 comeback victory over BG Tampines Rovers — that has firmly inserted them into the title conversation.

The challenge now is maintaining that momentum, and Balestier Khalsa represent a dangerous opponent for an Albirex side that could be tempted into complacency.

The Tigers themselves return to winning ways after their victory over Young Lions last weekend and will be equally motivated to continue their push up the table.

Both sides have plenty to play for — making this a contest that could go either way.
