The 2026/27 domestic football season gets underway on Sunday (September 6) with the SPL Playback Community Shield 2026/27, as reigning Singapore Premier League (SPL) champions Lion City Sailors face Tampines Rovers at Jalan Besar Stadium, with the match scheduled to kick off at 7.30pm.
With the first silverware of the new campaign at stake, Tampines will be looking to defend the trophy they won emphatically last season, when the Stags beat the Sailors 4-1 to claim a record sixth Community Shield.
Much has changed since that meeting.
The Sailors have strengthened their local core with the arrivals of Glenn Kweh, Ilhan Fandi, Ryhan Stewart, and Farhan Zulkifli. All four were involved with Singapore at the ASEAN Championship Hyundai Cup 2026 and will complement an experienced group that already includes Hariss Harun, Hami Syahin, Shawal Anuar, and Lionel Tan. Glenn will face his former club after spending three seasons with Tampines.
The champions have also bolstered their foreign contingent with Brazilian centre-back Hugo Gomes, attackers Matthias Phaeton and Antonio Mance, and former Liverpool youngster Bobby Adekanye.
However, there has been a late change in the Sailors’ dugout, with Head Coach Jesús Casas departing the club just days before the Community Shield. Assistant Coach Varo Moreno will take charge on an interim basis.
Sailors defender Bailey Wright believes the strengthened squad is well-equipped to meet the club’s ambitions this season.
“With a new season comes the same ambitions and expectations from us as a football club. But to go with those ambitions, we’ve got an even stronger squad than we’ve had probably in previous seasons,” said the Australian.
“We’ve added some real quality, with some players that we already know, certainly local players who have now come across and joined us. That really strengthens the group, and we’ve also brought in a good group of foreign players from various countries, with so many different experiences.”
Tampines, meanwhile, begin a new chapter under newly appointed Head Coach Nazri Nasir, who returns to the club where he previously played and served as captain. The former Singapore international took charge after the Stags finished second last season, just two points behind the Sailors.
Most notably, Tampines have retained their biggest attacking threat in Hide Higashikawa. The Japanese forward scored 19 goals in 20 league appearances last season and was named SPL Player of the Year.
Captain Syazwan Buhari highlighted that Higashikawa’s influence extended beyond his goals.
“Hide is very important, not just in scoring goals, but also by being the first defender for us when the team is defending. His work rate is second to none, and the energy that he brings to the team is very important,” he noted.
The Stags have retained a strong core from last season, including Kohya Kazama, Yuki Kobayashi, Irfan Najeeb, Jacob Mahler, Shah Shahiran, and Seiga Sumi. They have also added Japanese players Yuma Kimura, Shodai Yokoyama, and Kenshin Yamazaki, while left-back Takeshi Yoshimoto has returned to the club.
For Syazwan, the opportunity to defend the Community Shield provides extra motivation after last season’s success.
“It means a lot to be playing in this game because it reflects the work we put in last season,” said the Tampines goalkeeper.
“Not every team gets this opportunity, so we’re excited to start the season with a big game. We’re even more motivated to defend the trophy and gain some momentum for the season ahead.”
