A new season brings a fresh set of storylines, and the 2026/27 Singapore Premier League has no shortage of them. Tampines Rovers restart life after the conclusion of their three-year partnership with BG Pathum United; a Community Shield triumph is followed almost immediately by changes in the dugout, and two of last season’s bottom sides have expanded their search abroad in the hopes of bouncing back. Here are four talking points ahead of Matchweek 1 of the Singapore Premier League (SPL).
Stags eye strong start against battle-hardened Tigers
Tampines Rovers open their season by hosting Balestier Khalsa at Our Tampines Hub on Friday night. Having dropped the “BG” prefix and returned to their traditional identity, the Stags will also have a new head coach in club legend Nazri Nasir, who returns to Tampines on a one-year deal.
The timing is pointed. Tampines were beaten 2-0 by Lion City Sailors in last Sunday’s Community Shield, a match in which last season’s SPL Player of the Year Hide Higashikawa struck the woodwork before the break. Runners-up in the league last season, the Stags will be eager to put that result behind them and make a strong start to the new campaign, particularly on home turf.

Balestier, meanwhile, enter the new season on the back of a fourth-place finish under Marko Kraljevic, the veteran coach now well into his latest spell in charge. Having gone the best part of three decades without breaching the top three, the Tigers will fancy their chances of using the continuity in their setup to push on. A positive result against a Tampines side adapting to a new head coach would provide an encouraging start.

Sailors chase back-to-back titles under yet another new head coach

Lion City Sailors travel to Bishan Stadium on Saturday evening in defence of their SPL crown, and there is once again a new face in the dugout. Former Head coach Jesus Casas parted ways with the club in the days leading up to the Community Shield, with assistant Varo Moreno stepping in as interim head coach. The Sailors have since confirmed former Leeds United first-team coach and youth boss Mark Jackson – fresh from leading Buriram United to the ASEAN Club Championship (Shopee Cup) title – as Casas’s permanent successor on a deal until June 2027. With his appointment still subject to employment visa approval, however, it remains to be seen whether Jackson or Moreno will take charge against Hougang.
Despite the changes, the Sailors delivered at Jalan Besar Stadium, where Ilhan Fandi marked his first competitive appearance for the club with two goals in a 2-0 Community Shield win over Tampines. He was part of a starting eleven that featured seven debutants. With ambitions that stretch to the Singapore Cup, continental competition, and the league, the Sailors will want a similarly composed start to the league campaign.

Hougang United will provide no shortage of early resistance. Sixth-placed last season, the Cheetahs enter the new campaign under head coach Akbar Nawas and have strengthened across the pitch, bringing in Montenegrin defender Milos Drincic, Ecuadorian full-back Washington Jaramillo, and goalkeeper Takahiro Koga, who arrives from FC Jurong. A well-organised Hougang side at home is rarely a comfortable proposition, and the champions will need to be at their sharpest.

New-look FC Jurong visit Young Lions for competitive season opener

Sunday’s fixture at Jalan Besar Stadium marks a new chapter for FC Jurong, with the club long known as Albirex Niigata (S) taking to the field under its new identity for the first time in a competitive SPL match. Much of the attention, however, is likely to fall on the man wearing the No. 4 shirt: former Japan international Keisuke Honda, unveiled by the club in August and set for his first competitive appearance since signing. Honda, who turned 40 in June, has said his priority at FC Jurong is the league title, though he has also spoken of chasing a personal record for scoring in most countries’ top divisions. He joins a side that finished third last season under Keiji Shigetomi.

Young Lions head coach Firdaus Kassim will be well aware of the scale of that threat, but his side head into the new season with genuine reasons for optimism after finishing seventh last term. The Young Lions have recruited former Tampines Rovers defender Shuya Yamashita, and a clutch of J3 League-experienced Japanese players in Miyu Sato, Kagami Toi, and Hisatoshi Nishido. Daisuke Sakai has also joined from Indonesian side PSM Makassar, additions Firdaus hopes will sharpen a core group of promising young Singaporeans.
The Young Lions will be looking to make an early mark against a more experienced FC Jurong side, with Honda’s presence adding further intrigue to Sunday evening’s contest at Jalan Besar Stadium.

Jaguars look to leave last season’s struggles behind against steady Eagles

Monday night’s clash between Geylang International and Tanjong Pagar United at Our Tampines Hub closes out the opening round, and it is the visitors who will feel they have by far the more ground to make up. Geylang were a solid, unspectacular fifth last season under Mohd Noor Ali, who continues in the role, with new Serbian goalkeeper Milos Cupic – arriving from Philippine side One Taguig – set to marshal an Eagles defence looking to build a more consistent platform this term.
Tanjong Pagar, by contrast, are looking to climb out from the very bottom of the standings after finishing last of the eight clubs a season ago.
Under new Spanish head coach Miquel Llado, the Jaguars have recruited aggressively, headlined by the arrival of SPL 2022 Golden Boot winner Boris Kopitovic to spearhead the attack. He is joined by Japanese pair Masahiro Sugita and Riku Fukashiro, midfielder Lazar Vujanic, and Equatorial Guinea international Marvin Anieboh, while Japanese defender Yuki Aizu also bolsters the backline alongside Spanish goalkeeper Aitor Mujica.

Among the local arrivals are veterans Madhu Mohana and Taufik Suparno, as well as promising youngster Jared Gallagher.
Llado has been coy on targets for the season, saying only that the Jaguars “look competitive” and will assess themselves match by match – but a positive start against a Geylang side they will feel they can trouble would be the perfect way to signal intent for the campaign ahead.
