Statement on Young Lions player Nurshafiq Zaini

SINGAPORE, 16 JULY 2021 – Young Lions goalkeeper Nurshafiq Zaini has announced that he will be retiring from professional football with immediate effect. The 22-year-old was advised to stop all high-intensity activities after a recent medical examination.

Shafiq, as he is better known to his teammates, joined the club in 2020 from Tampines Rovers FC and made his professional debut that season. He has turned out a total of 15 times in the Singapore Premier League, including six appearances this year.

The Young Lions and FAS will continue to offer our fullest support to Shafiq, including any assistance for his transition to a non-playing capacity as a way for him to be involved in the game still.
