Rampant Protectors Clip Eagles

Written by: Muhammad Yazid

Home United fans were treated  to a goals galore at the Bishan stadium as their team enjoyed a convincing 4-1 victory over Geylang International.

Lee Lim Saeng’s side were seeking their first win of the season after their narrow 1-0 loss to Tampines Rovers last week, whereas the Eagles were looking to bounce back from a 2-1 loss to Warriors.

The home side drew first blood in the 12th minute when last season’s S.League Player of the Year Lee Kwan Woo struck a thunderous free-kick from the left which was pushed away by Geylang goalkeeper Siddiq Durimi, only for Izzdin Shafiq to be the quickest to react as he slammed the ball past the hapless custodian.

The lead could have been extended eight minutes later, but Yasir Hanapi could only agonisingly fire the ball straight into the arms of Siddiq after Sirina Camara’s low cross from the left was poorly dealt with by the Geylang defence.

The Eagles’ first chance came in the 28th minute through their Argentinean striker Leonel Felice, but a pin-point cross from Jalal could only be headed over the bar by the striker.

Home were put in their comfort zone two minutes before the interval when a precise long ball by Lee was well read by Yasir, and he cleverly beat the offside trap before tapping it in through the upright.

The restart seemed to be no different from the first half as Home added another two goals to their account through defender Kwon Dakyung and Yasir once again.

Kwon Dakyung rose the highest to head home a delightful inswinging corner from Lee in the 51st minute, and killed off any chance of a comeback by the struggling Eagles.

However, the away side were granted a consolation goal in the 63rd minute.  Hafiz Nor had space and time to lay a ball into the danger area from the right and Felice sliced the ball past Shahril Jantan into the bottom corner of the net to make up for his earlier miss in the first half.

V.Kanan’s side were pushing through to reduce the deficit, and came close through substitute Aliff Shaffein whose free-kick bounced off the crossbar, but the stubborn opposition defence held on resolutely.

It was the icing on the cake for Home in the 76th minute when a swift counter-attack left Geylang’s defence flat-footed and Yasir grabbed his brace with a deflected shot which squeezed into the bottom corner, and condemned the Eagles to another defeat.
