Rams Keen To Reach Top Six
Woodlands Wellington vs Tanjong Pagar United
(June 7, Saturday, 7.30pm, Woodlands Stadium)
Written by: Muhammad Yazid
Woodlands Wellington host Tanjong Pagar United at the Woodlands Stadium as both teams face off for the second time this season.
It was the Rams who emerged triumphant the first time round as they narrowly eked out a 1-0 win then, thanks to Taufiq Ghani’s header.
Both teams’ season have not gone as targeted, as they both languish in the lower half of the table as at time of print.
The reason for that has been the inconsistency of both teams’ main forwards, with Woodlands’ Chang Jo Yoon and Tanjong Pagar’s Monsef Zerka failing to replicate their goal-scoring exploits from the previous season.
The tasks does not become any easier for either side, as the Woodlands frontline will face a robust and reliable Ahmad Latiff, while the Jaguars will most probably find goalkeeper Yazid Yasin standing in their way of grabbing a goal.
Yazid will indeed have to be prepared in being up to his tasks as Tanjong Pagar relished a total of six shots on target in their last game, according to InStat.
The middle of the park may very well be the one which decides which team performs better, as midfield anchormen Atsushi Shimono and Sebastien Etiemble will be trying to keep the ball away from each other.
It may be the Jaguars who would have a better share of possession just like how they did in their last league game, as they had 50% of possession compared to Woodlands’ 45%.
Patrick Vallee’s side would have to play without the services of Firdaus Idros due to suspension and Prime League captain M Arvin’s may be called up to replace the winger.
As for Woodlands, their injury woes has not come to an end as Shahril Alias and Stefan Milojevic remain on the sidelines with long-term injuries and coach Darren Stewart would have a full squad to choose from apart from the duo.
A win for the Rams will push them closer to the top half of the table – their target for the end of the season.
Suspension: Firdaus Idros (Tanjong Pagar United)
Key Men To Watch
Woodlands Wellington: Taufiq Ghani
Woodlands’ midfield was all over the place in the Singapore Cup game against Geylang International when Taufiq had to miss due to suspension. Now that he is back in action against the Jaguars, he would be confident in making a difference in the team, just like how he did in the previous battle when he nodded in the only goal of the game.
Having had 74% of accurate passes and 50% of defensive challenges won, the brother of LionsXII’s Shahfiq Ghani looks to partner Atsushi Shimono in the heart of midfield in delivering to the South Korean strikeforce of Moon Soon Ho and Chang Jo Yoon.
Tanjong Pagar United: Ahmad Latiff
The skipper, despite being deployed in a centre-back position, has been using his attacking ideas to good use as his alertness and quickness in creating counter-attacks from the back can be relied on to reach targetman Monsef Zerka.
The 35-year-old also won 62% of defensive challenges and 67% of attacking challenges in the last game.
