RHB Singapore Cup: Global And Nagaworld Lock Horns For The First Time
Written by: Shawn Lim
Global FC will attempt to improve on their semi-final finish last year in the RHB Singapore Cup when they take on Nagaworld FC in the preliminary round of this year’s edition on Saturday night at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
This will be the Filipino club’s fourth appearance in the competition and they are eager to stand out amongst their fellow invitees Nagaworld and Ceres La Salle by winning a title on foreign soil.
That could become a reality sooner than later as Leigh Manson’s charges are currently in the form of their life and leading the pack at the summit of their domestic league, the United Football League.
With a title already in the bag this season in the form of the United Football League Cup, the People’s Club, as Global are affectionately known, are performing better than AFC participants Ceres and Kaya.
However, Global will first have to navigate a tricky tie against Nagaworld, who have won four out of their last five games and are currently sitting in third place in the Cambodian Premier League.
The Cambodians do not have have fond memories of this competition though, as they fell to a heavy 5-0 defeat to Home United two years ago.
Naga have since improved their squad, adding talented players like Sos Suhana, Tum Saray, Park Yong-joon to a team led by the experienced Masahiro Fukasawa.
