Many were making their way to the Bishan Stadium to show their support for reigning Malaysia Super League (MSL) champions, LionsXII. But a slightly different sight greeted them when they arrived at the stadium.

The S.League had set-up a booth at the stadium’s entrance to promote the upcoming Community Shield match between Tampines Rovers and Home United on 21 February. There were complimentary ice-cream given out to fans that visited the booth and they were able to find out more about the S.League and show their support to Singapore’s only professional football league by purchasing the jerseys and merchandise on sale there.

One such fan that welcomed this initiative by the S.League to reach out to the footballing community is 25-year-old Malcolm Tay.

“I only started watching football in Singapore and I appreciate this effort by the S.League to spread awareness to the other football fans in Singapore. I bought two jerseys and I hope that they will continue selling these during the S.League matches,” said Tay who came with his friends to Bishan Stadium.

The move to have an S.League presence during LionsXII game was also given the thumbs up by 45-year-old Ali Farkhan, who brought his two sons along to the match.

“I had always followed the S.League since it began in 1996. I did take my sons to several S.League match last season and we (are) definitely look forward to the Community Shield match,” said Ali who bought a mini-jersey for his little ones.

The Community Shield between 2013 Great Eastern Yeo’s S.League champions Tampines Rovers and RHB Singapore Cup winner Home United will take place on 21st of February at the Jalan Besar Stadium with kickoff slated for 7.30pm.
