SINGAPORE, 16 JULY 2021 – Tanjong Pagar United have reinforced their defence with the capture of Singapore international Shakir Hamzah.

The Jaguars announced earlier today morning that the 28-year-old will turn out for them for the remainder of the 2021 AIA Singapore Premier League (SPL) campaign, making them the fourth local club in Shakir’s career. The versatile defender, who is equally comfortable at centre-back and left-back, had mutually terminated his contract with Malaysia Super League (MSL) side Perak FC in May. He will don the number 26 jersey.

A club statement read: “The defender, who can play in the central and left-back positions, is a welcome reinforcement to the Jaguars’ backline. Shakir, 28, has a wealth of experience and is known for his speed and whole-hearted style of play.”

A product of the National Football Academy, Shakir began his professional career with the Young Lions in 2009 before moving to the LionsXII in 2012. He helped them to the MSL title in 2013 and returned to the SPL with the Young Lions in 2015. A move to Tampines Rovers in 2016 followed, which saw Shakir spend two seasons there before a transfer to Home United in 2018. Part of the Home side that triumphed in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup ASEAN Zonal final that year, he then left to join Kedah FA the following season and spent two years there before a move to Perak at the start of 2021.

Capped 53 times at international level, Shakir will hope to help Tanjong Pagar improve their fortunes in the league this season, where they currently sit seventh out of eight teams.
