2024/25 Singapore Premier League Match Week 17: Preview

SINGAPORE, 20 SEPTEMBER 2024 – The excitement continues in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) with the start of Matchweek 17. The weekend kicks off with the second Jurong East Derby of the season, as Albirex Niigata (S) and Tanjong Pagar United go head-to-head on Friday night.

On Saturday, the sole fixture features Young Lions, who impressed with a strong performance against BG Tampines Rovers last week, facing off against Hougang United. Both teams will be eager to secure the three points on offer.

Matchweek 17 wraps up with a doubleheader. The Bishan Derby sees Lion City Sailors take on Balestier Khalsa before Brunei DPMM host BG Tampines at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, hoping to finally clinch their first home win of the season.

  • Both sides are struggling at the lower end of the league table and will be looking for a positive result to aid their recovery.
  • This will be the first derby for both Keiji Shigetomi and Hyrizal Jufri this season.
  • The Jaguars caused an upset by defeating the White Swans with a 2-1 scoreline in their first meeting in July.

  • Young Lions came close to upsetting unbeaten BG Tampines Rovers in their last match and will be looking to build on their good form.
  • Both sides are level on 14 points in the standings with the Cheetahs having played a game less than their opponents,
  • The two sides played to a 2-2 draw in their first encounter back in July.

  • The Sailors go into the fixture at the top of the league standings for the first time since Matchweek 8.
  • Balestier will be looking to their talismanic midfielder Ismail Sassi for inspiration as he is in rich vein of form after scoring in his last six games.
  • In the first Bishan Derby of the season in July, the Sailors ran out 4-2 winners with goals coming from Bart Ramselaar, Toni Datkovic and a brace from Maxime Lestienne.
