FAS Referee Department Statement on VAR error

The FAS Referee Department, in accordance with its standard procedures, conducted a review of an incident during the Singapore Premier League match between Lion City Sailors FC (LCSFC) and Albirex Niigata FC (S) (ANFC) on June 23, 2024, and acknowledges that a significant refereeing error had occurred.

In the match, a goal scored by ANFC player Shuhei Hoshino in the first half was allowed to stand, despite being offside upon review. This error, initially made by the on-field referee and assistant referee, should have been corrected by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team, which failed to do so.

The FAS Referee Department is committed to maintaining high refereeing standards and takes this error seriously. Disciplinary action has been taken against the officials involved. Additionally, a review of VAR protocols has been instituted to prevent such incidents in the future.

Although the incorrect decision did not affect the final result, the clubs involved have been informed of the review, the error, and the measures taken to prevent recurrence. The on-field result will stand.
