Historic Merdeka Stadium to host the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup 2024

SINGAPORE 26 JULY 2024 – The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup (SOS Cup) is set to make a grand return this year, marking its first edition since the COVID-19 pandemic. The SOS tournament is meant to maintain and strengthen ties between Selangor and Singapore who have a storied rivalry dating back to the days of the Malaysia Cup era.

Established in 2001, the SOS Cup has grown into a prestigious annual football event, fostering camaraderie and competition between Selangor and Singapore. This year’s event will be held at the iconic Merdeka Stadium, a venue steeped in history and shared memories from the golden era of the Malaysia Cup.

From the 1970s through the 1990s, this stadium was the venue where Singapore and Selangor etched unforgettable moments into the records of football history. The return to this historic venue is a revival of the shared memories that defined an entire generation of fans.

Having lost 1-0 to a Selangor Selection at the last edition of the SOS Cup in 2019 hosted at the Shah Alam Stadium, the Singapore Selection will be looking to claim their ninth win of the series.

A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE FOR SINGAPORE FANS

Fans interested in catching this exciting match-up may sign up from now until 12pm on Tuesday 13 August 2024, with limited availability on a first-come, first-served basis. This is a chance to relive the glory days where fans would travel up to the Merdeka Stadium by bus to support the team and return immediately after the match.

Now, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) is enhancing this nostalgic journey by providing complimentary two-way transportation and match tickets for Singapore fans. Additionally, those opting for the bus ride will enjoy a day tour with pitstops to experience the sights, sounds, and flavours of Malaysia, making this not just a match, but a trip into a facet of Singapore football history.

Mr. Teo Hock Seng, Football Association of Singapore Vice President and Co-Chairman of The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup expressed his enthusiasm on the return of the event, saying: “As we eagerly anticipate the return of the Sultan of Selangor Cup after a four-year hiatus, this event symbolises the rich historical rivalry between Singapore and Selangor.”

“I am thrilled to witness both teams renewing their friendly competition on the pitch. To all fans of Selangor and Singapore, this occasion not only celebrates our shared passion for football but also brings together generations of players and fans alike. Let us unite at Merdeka Stadium, creating unforgettable memories and cheering our teams as one football family,” he added.
