SINGAPORE, 30 JULY 2024 – Balestier Khalsa Head Coach Peter de Roo has been appointed to lead the Singapore Premier League (SPL) Selection Team in their quest for victory at The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup (SOS Cup) 2024 this August. This marks his first time at the helm of the SPL Selection Team.

The Dutchman has assembled a balanced squad, blending youth with experience. Seasoned SOS campaigners the likes of BG Tampines Rovers pair Syazwan Buhari and Faris Ramli will provide leadership to young newcomers such as Farhan Zulkifli and Jared Gallagher.

The Selection Team sees players from five SPL sides come together alongside four foreign players: winger Riko Fukashiro and forward Kodai Tanaka from Balestier Khalsa, as well as Tampines pair Kyoga Nakamura and Shuya Yamashita.

“First and foremost, I am thankful and honoured to be given the opportunity to coach the Singapore Premier League Selection team as a foreign coach. Secondly, to do it against Selangor in Malaysia will be very special for me personally,” said de Roo.

“I had a fruitful time working in Malaysia and I am very much aware of the significance of the Merdeka Stadium in Malaysian football history. We are very much looking forward to the challenge,” added the 54-year-old Dutchman.

Having suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to the Selangor Selection in the 2019 edition played at the Shah Alam Stadium, the Singapore Selection is determined to secure their ninth victory in the series this time around.

The Singapore Veterans team roster has also been finalised, showcasing a mix of younger players such as Noor Ali and Aliimran Lomri, who are set to strengthen the squad for their upcoming match against the Selangor Veterans. The star-studded lineup also features football icons from the 1980s and 1990s, including Malek Awab, Fandi Ahmad and Nazri Nasir. Under the guidance of coach Ho Kwang Hock and team manager Samad Allapitchay, the veterans are ready to make their mark on the field once again and relive the nostalgia of the intense cross-Causeway rivalry between Singapore and Selangor.

Young Lions captain Farhan Zulkifli, is looking forward to his first taste of the SOS.

“It is an honour to represent our league and country in this historic event. It will be a great occasion, and I for one am excited to see what it was like in the old days of our football, with Singapore fans cheering for a Singapore team in Kuala Lumpur’s Merdeka Stadium,” said the 21-year-old. I have only heard stories, and I’m really looking forward to experiencing it firsthand.”

The 20th edition of the SOS will take place on 17 August 2024 at the Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
