The New Paper League Cup 2016: Eagles Face Difficult White Swans Challenge

The New Paper League Cup (Group B)

Geylang International vs Albirex Niigata (S)

(Friday, 22 July, 7.30pm, Bedok Stadium)

Nothing but a victory will do for Geylang International when they welcome Albirex Niigata (S) to Bedok Stadium on Friday night for their final The New Paper League Cup Group B match if they want to keep their very faint hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive.

The Eagles drew 2-2 in their opening game against Balestier Khalsa, before falling to a heavy 5-0 defeat to Home United at home in their second game, which has left them at the foot of the group with one point.

Geylang though, still have an outside chance of finishing second on goal difference if Balestier manage to beat Home by a goal and the Eagles beat the White Swans by three goals.

However, if Home and Balestier battle to a draw, Geylang will have to beat Albirex by nine goals, and if the Protectors defeat the Tigers, the Eagles will finish third even if they manage to achieve a victory against the White Swans.

Despite the odds being stacked heavily against them, the Eagles coach Hasrin Jailani has called for his charges to show their character when they take on Albirex, after the thrashing by the Protectors last week.

“It won’t be easy against Albirex in the next game,” admitted Hasrin after the defeat to the Protectors.

“The players need to show character and after a big defeat, it is not easy, but we need to show character to put up a better performance.”

Hasrin will have a mammoth task on his hand when picking his team to face the White Swans, as he will be missing up to 10 players who are either away on international duties or are suspended for the tie.

Syazwan Buhari, Daniel Bennett, Faritz Hameed, Safirul Sulaiman, Gabriel Quak, Amy Recha and Sahil Suhaimi are currently in Japan with the Singapore national, while second-choice goalkeeper Hairul Syirhan has been called up by the Under-21 side.

Meanwhile, defenders Nor Azli Yusoff and Al-Qaasimy Rahman are suspended after the former received a red card and the latter received his second yellow card of the competition in the match against Home.

Albirex have no injuries and suspensions to worry about, but could see their fringe players being given a run out with a semi-final spot already secured.
