Written by: Shawn Lim
The Singapore Selection will take on Selangor Selection on Saturday evening at the Singapore National Stadium in The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup (TSSC) 2017, with both sides promising to put on a good display for the fans.
The annual tournament will return to the city-state for the first time since 2009 and will see Singapore Sports School take on Selangor Combined Schools in the Singapore-Selangor Schools Challenge Cup, the Singapore Veterans take Selangor Veterans in a trip down memory lane before the main match between Singapore Selections and Selangor Selection at 8pm.
“We have a good blend of players, together with the young and senior players. The presence of Hariss Harun as the captain of the team will motivate the players even more,” said Singapore Selection assistant coach Nazri Nasir.
“We may have young players like Irfan Fandi, but he has been playing regularly for his club and the national team. We have senior players like Shahril Ishak, whose presence will help a lot for the game.
“We hope that it will be a very interesting game and a good entertainment for the fans.”
Agreeing with Nazri was Selangor Selection Head Coach E. Elavarasan who added that his charges will give their all despite the gulf in quality.
“It will be an interesting game because the Singapore team is well set-up for the game this year and they brought in all the good players from the S.League,” said the 52-year-old.
“Matches between Singapore and Selangor have always been intense and fans will definitely look forward towards it.”
For Singapore Selection Captain Hariss Harun, the Home United midfielder promises that the match will be a game of high intensity, which will help him continue his road to achieving full match fitness.
“The team is in good spirits, we got together yesterday for a session and we have another session today so we are all looking forward to the game,” said Hariss.
“This match holds a lot of history for both teams and it is going to be significant. The 90 minutes will be a good competition for both teams, who will go all out to get a win. Especially so for us, as we are the home team and TSSC is returning to Singapore after eight years.
“We have the cream of the crop in the S.League and Selangor brought along their best available selection, so it will be a very high intensity game. So for me to be involved, it is good for me to regain match fitness.”
Echoing Hariss’ sentiments, captain of the Selangor Selection Safee Sali said: “It has always been tough playing against Singapore.
“But it will be even tougher playing against the Singapore Selection which is made up of the best players in the S.League who has Hariss as captain.”
