Warriors Care For The Community
Written by: Khais Rifhan
Warriors Football Club have been synonymous in partnering the community in Choa Chu Kang and showing their appreciation to the support given towards the club in recent years.
Last Sunday was no difference as head coach Alex Weaver and his players were out and about early in the morning to join the residents in distributing packets of rice in conjunction with 2014 Yew Tee Day.
According to the organiser, a total of 1,420 volunteers spent a total of 12 hours distributing 148 WeCare packs and 16,118kg of rice collected by donors for those in need.
“We are doing this for the people who are less fortunate, so obviously it is a good initiative by the club and the community here,” commented Warriors’ captain Daniel Bennett who added that this is not their first time collaborating with community programmes in the area.
“Our general manager (Chong Wei Chiang) and chairman (Lam Shiu Tong) have done a tremendous job to get the club and community in Yew Tee and Choa Chu Kang closer.
“The attendance at our games have increased and we are definitely pleased when we see them at the stadium to show their support for local football.”
Present at the event was Member of Parliament for Choa Chu Kang GRC Mr Alex Yam, who was presented with a Warriors jersey by Bennett.
Mr Yam is also an avid supporter of local football and can be spotted at Warriors home matches and Singapore national team matches.
Also taking time out to join the players was club fitness coach Karim Silas who constantly put on a smile on his face while interacting with the residents during the distribution of rice.
“It is a good opportunity for us to give back to the community, especially in this month of Ramadhan we are able to do charity work,” explained Karim.
“More importantly we can build the relationship between the residents and the club. We are beginning to see that tie between us grow.”
