SINGAPORE, 27 AUGUST 2021 – Geylang International have boosted their goalkeeping department with the addition of experienced custodian Zaiful Nizam for the remainder of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) season.
The 34-year-old had been without a club since his contract was terminated by Balestier Khalsa earlier this month. The Eagles announced Zaiful’s arrival earlier today, making them the third club in his professional career.
Zaiful, who has been assigned the number 30 jersey, told the club’s website: “I’m very grateful to Geylang International for giving me the opportunity to continue my professional football career with them. It is a club steeped in history and I look forward to be part of the team and bring glory to the club.”
Geylang Head Coach Noor Ali said: “Zaiful is a very experienced goalkeeper and I’m confident he will provide that stability in goal as we shore up our defensive unit. We look forward to having Zaiful as a key member of our squad.”
Capped thrice by Singapore, Zaiful has established himself as one of the leading local goalkeepers after a stellar eight-year spell at Balestier. Having started his career in 2009 at Gombak United, Zaiful joined the Tigers in 2013 and went on to amass over 200 appearances, while also becoming their captain. He was part of their League Cup and Singapore Cup winning squads in 2013 and 2014, which remain the club’s only trophies to date.
Zaiful will join Hairul Syirhan and Wayne Chew in the Eagles’ stable of goalkeepers and is “expected to be an integral member of the team” for the rest of the season.
